24-HOUR DESIGN SPRINT CHALLENGE:
CARE FAMILIES
“How might we reimagine social care provision to overcome the massive staff shortages?”
Given the chance to do a design-sprint competition during my masters year, I took the opportunity to step back from other projects and challenge myself in something completely new. The brief questioned how we might reimagine social care provision in light of staff shortages and, despite initially knowing very little about the social care industry, we were awarded best pitch.
We approached the time-constrained challenge with the double-diamond design-thinking strategy, ensuring we had a framework but still allowing ourselves to be agile when necessary. Without time to delegate specific roles, we worked closely with one another to diverge as much as possible before converging into an area where we could use our personal backgrounds to come up with something out of the box.
We produced a novel approach mimicking gig-economy employment for aspects of social care work that didn’t require qualifications. We found a way to target the student demographic, who play a big part in the gig-economy, whilst simultaneously building a structure that ensures that patients can still develop feelings of security with these part-time workers.
